Born at the end of the Baby Boom, my serious interest in popular music began
in my high school years of 1979-1982. This was the time of transition away
from Disco, and the Punk scene that would explode into another British
invasion of New Wave in the 80s. A review of America's own versions of the
Punk-New Wave transition.
Obamarama
The Democratic Primary of 2007-2008 made history in many ways. For me I
was just glad to have a political candidate who was intelligent and eloquent,
and who could once again emphasise the character and qualities that I
personally feel make America a great country. Independent of the final result,
the cultural spin-off from his campaign (official and very unofficial) made for
great watching.
El Mundo Español
As my private environment has moved from English to French to Spanish to
German to (Belgian) French and now to Dutch (with an overlay of Japanese),
the Spanish language remains one of my favourites, and like English always
sounds good in music. A selection of some of my favourite Spanish-language
songs, from Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Uruguay.
Influential Early New Wave
Jean-Baptiste Mondino
The pages that launched this section. Living in Paris in 1984-85 and then again
from 1987-1995, I was marked by the visual genius of French photographer and
designer Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Starting with cinema and TV commercials,
moving immediately into some the earliest and best music videos, and moving
back to commercials again.
He is at least partly responsible for making the male form an erotic object in
mainstream media design, and for creating very European but long-lasting
images of America. His work with Madonna includes some her most striking,
including "Justify My Love", "Human Nature" and "Open Your Heart".

Japanese Pops
Karaoke and trips to Japan have long been an occupational hazard for me. A
selection of some of my favourite Japanese Pop music, that give a glimpse of
how the country has been changing over the past 20 years. Perhaps not
surprisingly, my choices may not be the all-time Japanese best sellers, but
have definitely influenced my personal taste in music (with the possible
exception of Morning Musume!)
A Little Romance
The iconic film of my childhood, which had a profound influence on me when I
first saw it as a 15-year-old, roughly the same age as the main characters.
Paris, international love, success at impossible odds and...Houston. The
whole film is shown here in 12 installments.
