Around the world - Daft Punk (Paris)
The song and the group that many credit for changing the sound of electronic dance music.
Also the song I heard in Europe, Asia and North America the first time I flew around the world
(the other was Madonna's "Ray of Light"). Bouncy if a bit repetitive.
Relax, take it easy - MIKA (London)
Destined to be the song of 2007. This Lebanese dude based in London came from nowhere
to take over the radio, tv and every party and club you ever went to that year. A deservedly
great song, with a fun 70s psychedelic video
Champion Sound - Fatboy Slim (London)
I love British DJ Fatboy Slim's mixes. This one I first heard as part of the soundtrack to our
Body Balance class at the gym. Interesting YouTube virtual reality video.
Edo anthem - E.D.O. (Tokyo)
Edo was the name Tokyo before the emperor took up residence during the Meiji restoration.
A new rap group that I first heard at HMV in Shibuya in Dec 2007. The only song of theirs on
YouTube was abuptly removed due to "usage violation".
Shaya Mahoota - Drenko (Johannesburg)
On to some "African-african" rap music, from the dynamic urban jungle that is Johannesburg.
A song taken from among many excellent tracks from the soundtrack album of the Academy
Award-winning South African film Tsotsi.
Ding - Seeed (Berlin)
I first heard this song at a company party in Düsseldorf in October, 2007. The driving beat
from a hindi movie with staccato German lyrics about overindulgence perfectly fit the wild
atmosphere and beautiful girls in fuzzy cowboy hats. An irresistible dance song for funk fans.
The official video was just taken down, here is a rather weak (and strange) substitute.
Do it again - The Chemical Brothers (London)
Everyone has felt like this at some point in their young lives. Even in Afghanistan (or wherever
that is) if you believe their very strange little video. I'm sure Al Qaeda would not approve, but
that's probably the point.
Alla som inte dansar - Maskinen (Stockholm)
So that's what happened to the vikings, and still seem to be misbehaving. Good beat that
finally takes the Swedish language away from all those Muppet Show "Swedish Chef" jokes.
Like this like that - Se:sa (Brussels)
Even YouTube isn't sure about the origin of this fun dance track. I put it in Brussels because
it's so weird in a fun and mixed-up way, and for the line "it really don't matter where you come
from, Japan or Russia or even Belgium!"
