Liubi Liubi, I love you - Todomondo - Romania
A Fun song that builds and builds, sung in English, Italian, Spanish, Russian, French and
Romanian. 2007 was a good European year for Romania, entering the EU and making the
finals of the Eurovision song contest.
Water - Elitsa Todorova - Bulgaria
A hip twist on traditional Bulgarian vocals, with stunning percussion that put on a good show
in Helsinki. Bulgaria not only made the finals but the top 10, assuring a direct place in the
finals next year.
Yassou Maria - Sarbel - Greece
Classic example of the current trend towards "sing in English, ethnic bridge" formula of
Eurovision songs. Half-Lebanese Sarbel may be a little bit too good of a dancer to convince
you that "she is mine".
Shake it up shekerim - Kenan Dogulu - Turkey
Ever since Tarkan's great song "Simarik" took Europe by storm, Turkey has been trying to
clone it ever since. A bit controversial in Turkey itself for holding to Eurovision formula. One of
the better videos prepared in advance of the competition itself. "Shekerim" means "Sweety".
Funny that both the Greeks and Turks were "shaking it up" in 2007.
Ma Khalas - Samira Said - Egypt
Egypt doesn't participate in Eurovision, but Samira remains one of my favourite
Arabic-language divas, hardly the image of the Middle East or Islam that is usually provided to
Americans. Great tune with strong western influences.
Leysh nat'arak - Natacha Altas - Egypt
Natacha stood me up at a concert in Brussels, but I forgive her. The half-Egyptian half-Belgian
beauty continues to deliver the goods. My playlist features a lounge remix, the linked video is
a rather over-the-top costume drama of the original version.
Visionary Dream - Sopho - Georgia
No, not that Georgia. It was the former Soviet socialist republic's first entry in Eurovision, and
they made it to the finals with this excellent Bjork-inspired song, my favourite from the contest.
A rather soviet-influenced (ballet!) but beautiful video nicely promotes the song and its singer,
who was chosen to represent the country before holding a contest to pick the actual song.
Loslappie (ek wil huistoe gaan) - Kurt Darren - South Africa
Fun song from the community whose language changed from Dutch into Afrikaans as they
trekked inland. Unlike most Afrikaner music (which sounds strangely like Flemish schlager),
this one has an unmistakeable African beat to it, building nostalgia for those white South
Africans who fled to Australia, Canada and Britain.
Ehlala - Zola - South Africa
Apartheid may be over, but economic differences still remain. This song featured in the
excellent Oscar-winning South African film "Tsotsi", played as background dance music in a
Soweto shebeen. Since no video is available, the link goes to previews for the film.
Pop! goes my heart - Hugh Grant - UK
And now for something completely different. Hugh Grant features and sings in a faux video of
a song supposedly from 1984. The song is pure 80s, and the video intentionally repeats
every cheezy cliché of those old videos we hated to love. Very clever, and irresistable to a child
of the 80s like myself.
