We are the ones
Will.i.am's round two. Different
demographic targeting, daring
to be a bit more "black", a bit
more "young" and certainly
much more "hispanic" than the
"Yes We Can" video. So where
is Will.i.am's video targeting the
white male working class. Or is
that left to Obama girl?
Obamarama
My Planet on YouTube
Being a left coast college educated socially liberal Democrat (who drives a Mercedes), I am being true to my
demographic and support Barack Obama. Why do I like him so much? For his intelligence? His message of
hope? His ability to finish a sentence without making the country look bad?
His "New Hampshire" and post Wright "Race" speeches were exactly what I want to hear from a president of the
United States.
Away from the traditional politics, the 2008 race is having a greater than usual effect on popular culture, with
much of it popping up on YouTube. It all started with "Obama Girl" as early as June 2007, but achieved
eloquence with Will.i.am's videos, including setting text of the New Hampshire speech to music. Below are few
examples, some of which I've found deeply moving, some entertaining, all effective.
Under Barack Obama
My how the world has changed
quickly. When MAD TV made
this parody based on Rihanna's
hit song "Umbrella", Hillary was
still well in the lead.
Naughty? Facile? Yes. But
still awfully funny.
Yes We Can - Will.i.am
The singer of the Black Eyed
Peas collects an eclectic group
of the beautiful and musical,
and sets Obama's New
Hampshire speech to music.
The humble approach and
simple but beautiful melodies to
justice to and emphasise
Obama's message of hope. So
do the gentle but direct eye
contact and implied honesty
and integrity of the artists.
Ever the target demographic, I
still find this moving. "In the
unlikely story that is America,
there has never been anything
false about hope".
I've got a Crush on Obama
Obama Girl appeared as early
as June 2007, one of the first
viral advertising campaigns.
Many many imitators have
popped up, although most of
them (such and the horrid
McCain girls and a pathetic
Huckabee girl) are obviously
negative advertising. Could
Obama girl also be just a joke?
Of course she is, but a positive
one. At least it's funnier and
better written than the
alternatives. The bikini works
too.
Obama Girl Returns
This is "the song that won
Iowa". Obama girl is back
Rocky and Rambo style with a
movie-style trailer that was
released just in time for the
Iowa Primary (that Obama won).
Clever.
Stop the Attacks - Obama
Girl
An appeal to Hillary to quit, with
amusing references to Hillary's
own attack ads, especially the
"3am phone call" used
effectively in southern and
central states. The same
humour from the original
Obama Girl video, but getting
much more political, and with an
obviously higher production
budget.
The "Yes We Can"
Speech, New Hampshire
After being the surprise win in
Iowa, Obama lost New
Hampshire to Clinton. He
nevertheless gave one of his
most influential speeches,
gracious and inspirational,
which was to be used by the
Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am for
the basis of his now equally
famous video below.
