Jazz (YSL perfume) 1986
Made as an advertisment to be
shown in movie theatres before
the main feature. Some of his
most common themes and
styles show up immediately
Classic black and white with an
(African-) American accent.
Cycle Jean-Baptiste Mondino
My Planet on YouTube
Jean-Baptiste Mondino is a French fashion photographer and designer. His eye has certainly influenced my
world, an impact strengthened by his obvious love for North American imagery. Everything he touches
becomes more sexy, attractive and exciting, often just by tweaking its context. He understands and has helped
define what and who makes America cool in the eyes of France, and spices up European elegance with
American energy. This hybrid has become a reference of style around the world. Here are some of the images
that have stuck in my mind over the years, some known only in France but others world-famous.
Kodak 1987
Also shown in movie theatres
and on TV. Fun, fast paced,
and with quirky characters
including the Kodak kids in their
bizarre outfits who were to be
featured in several follow-up
campaigns. Again, North
American brashness combined
with European chic to create a
bold new style.
Lee Cooper Jeans 1991
Music by British group UB40, a
departure from designer
Jean-Paul Goude who did
quirky Lee Cooper ads in
France the 80s. Using black
Americans and Brits to sell
jeans to young Europeans.
Jean-Paul Gaultier 1995
Stunningly beautiful ad, one of
my favourites of all time. An
eclectic mix of beautiful women
of all ages and personalities
(many speaking English) with
only style in common. "Spirit,
are you there?", they summon,
and Jean-Paul himself appears
magically at the seance.
Jean-Paul Gaultier 2004
Nine years later and
Jean-Paul's perfumes are still
around. Very senusal imagery
that (like Gaultier) is beautiful
while challenging classical
concepts of beauty, masculinity,
femininity and everything in
between.
Dior 2006
This ad drove home how global
business in our world has
become, as I watched it on an
advertising screen on the
streets of Shanghai. A South
African woman in a European
ad selling to a North American
in Asia.
Calvin Klein 2008
New modern styling, but it
seems to be more in the bland
but Amero-chic Calvin Klein
formula than other Mondino
work.
